Prostate Mysteries Explored by A. Katz

On Sept. 29, 2009 OneWorld presented a community education on Prostate Health.  Drs. John Colberg, M.D., Assoc Prof of Surgery, Section of Urology & Wm Kevin Kelly, D.O., Assoc Prof of Medical Oncology, Yale School of Medicine & Cancer Center spent two hours in the Citizen’s TV studio answering questions from community residents and yours truly about Prostate Health.  The questions covered a wide range of issues related to the prostate, its functions and the most common problems. We covered:

A definition of the Prostate Gland

Walnut-sized gland

Surrounds the urethra

Lies at the base of the bladder

Secretes 25% of the seminal fluid during ejaculation

Diseases of the Prostate Gland

Prostatitis -Inflammation or infection

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia)

Non-malignant enlargement of the prostate gland

Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Risks

Race

African American men risk of prostate cancer and of dying from prostate cancer is 8-10 X greater than Caucasian male

American Indians, Hispanics & Asians at a relatively low risk

Age – 60+% occur over age 60

Family history (a father or brother incr. risk)

Possibly diet with foods high in animal fats increase risk for prostate cancer
